A hymen reconstruction — also called a hymenoplasty — is a surgical procedure in which existing hymenal tissue is sutured or tissue at the vaginal opening is reconstructed.
Important: the appearance of the hymen cannot reliably show whether someone has had intercourse. Bleeding during later intercourse cannot be predicted or guaranteed after reconstruction. “Virginity” is not a medical diagnosis.

The reasons are individual. In the consultation, expectations, possible pressures and alternatives are discussed without judgement.
Some women consider the procedure for personal, family or cultural reasons. It is expressly explained that an operation can neither create “virginity” nor prove or disprove earlier sexual intercourse.
After distressing or traumatic experiences, psychosocial or psychotherapeutic counselling may be advisable first. An operation is only one possible decision, to be weighed carefully, and does not replace trauma therapy.
The shape and elasticity of the hymen differ from person to person and can change independently of sexual intercourse. Before a decision, the benefits, limits, risks and the patient’s personal safety are discussed.
A hymenoplasty is a small soft-tissue procedure, usually carried out under local anaesthetic. It takes 30 to 60 minutes and requires no hospital stay.
Local anaesthetic is used to reduce pain during the procedure. Pain, swelling or bruising can occur afterwards and vary from person to person. You can normally go home the same day.
Our practice in Berlin offers you complete discretion throughout the whole process. Your privacy matters to us, and we work with the greatest care and to current medical standards.
After the procedure it is important to rest. Many patients return to light everyday activities after one to two days, but recovery varies.
Mild pain can occur but responds well to ordinary painkillers. Complete healing normally takes two to three weeks.
Taking it easy. Light activity is usually possible after a few days. Avoid sport, tampons and intercourse for about three weeks so that the suture heals well and the hymen can heal completely. Follow-up appointments are arranged individually.

What does a hymen reconstruction cost? There is no flat rate. Time in theatre, technique, anaesthetic and the extent of the procedure differ from person to person. You get a binding quote at the end of your consultation — in writing, with nothing hidden.
Will insurance pay? As a rule, no: purely aesthetic procedures are paid privately. German statutory insurers only contribute where a medical indication is recognised; private insurers and international policies decide case by case. We will tell you honestly whether you have any prospect of cover. And the consultation itself? Medical advice is a treatment in its own right and is invoiced under the German scale of medical fees (GOÄ) — including when you decide against a procedure afterwards. We tell you what to expect when the appointment is made.
These points apply generally. What applies in your case – with existing conditions or regular medication – we go through at your pre-operative consultation. That conversation is what counts.

Bleeding is possible, but it cannot be predicted or guaranteed. The same is true without surgery. Bleeding or its absence cannot reliably show whether someone has previously had intercourse.
The local anaesthetic itself can sting. It is intended to reduce pain during surgery, but a pain-free procedure cannot be guaranteed. Pain, soreness and swelling can occur afterwards and are treated according to individual need.
One to two days for most people. Sport, tampons and intercourse wait about three weeks; complete healing takes two to three.
